100% MERLOT FROM THE HEART OF BORDEAUX
La Fleur 2014, produced by the Chateau Haut-Piquat winery, is a great, silky Bordeaux made from 100% Merlot. A red wine that can only be found in Bordeaux. This Bordeaux, which dispenses with its usual partners Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, already impresses on the nose with a fine woody spice together with lots of wild berries, some vanilla and coconut. In the mouth then initially elegant, restrained fruit, clear albeit well integrated tannins, with aeration then plums and blackberries, ripe black cherries, plus tobacco, liquorice, violets, toasted notes from black bread and green spiciness. Ripe tannins and balanced acidity ensure a slim and fine wine with a medium body that expresses the finesse of the growing area.
STEEP CLIMB OF THE CHATEAU HAUT-PIQUAT
La Fleur is made from the estate's best plots. The grapes are harvested by hand, then fermented at controlled temperature for three weeks and left on the skins. The wine is aged in oak barrels, half of which are new, for around 15 months. The Château Haut Piquat is located 10 km north-east of Saint Emilion and owns around 22 hectares in the AOC Lussac Saint Emilion wine region. It was taken over by Jean-Pierre Rivière in 1972 with only eleven hectares. The vineyards were in poor condition and, thanks to extensive renovation work, have since been able to regain the nobility of the old days. This level is also reflected in the current vintage of La Fleur.
