Le Petit Mouton 2019
Origin: France
Deep garnet-purple colored. It wafts out with alluring scents of baked blackberries, blackcurrant cordial, and juicy plums, plus suggestions of menthol, pencil lead, and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, rich, and seductive, the palate delivers impressive layers of red and black fruits with velvety tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing with a serious amount of depth.
Le Petit Mouton is the second wine from the prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild. This red wine is made in this premier Grand Cru Classé in northwest Bordeaux, in the A.O.C. Pauillac.
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the winemaking greats (founded in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild) that all wine lovers should experience. However, with two centuries of history this also means we are talking about one of the most expensive wines in the world. An indulgence that is not within everyone’s budget.
As usual, this history, this lineage and these expertise come at a price. Le Petit Mouton starts life in a land of gravel and pebble hills, 30 metres above sea level, between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic with a humid climate and humid temperatures, growing high quality grapes. These grapes are manually harvested in small open baskets from the young vines of the First Growth vineyard. They are then taken to the vat room. This is where the grapes are selected and lightly crushed, then transferred by gravity to oak (from the best French forests) and stainless steel vats. Le Petit Mouton is fermented separately by variety. Finally, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is left to age for 18 months in French oak barrels.
